Probably would never bring any of my cars here again. Brought my truck in for a diagnosis and quote to repair. The timing chain needed replacing which is a big job for this truck as the engine has to be removed. Finally got the estimate from Tooles and was quoted a ridiculous amount of money. $199 an hour plus over $2,000 in parts. This is a 2005 Ford, the parts are readily available from many different suppliers. I couldn’t understand why they would charge me 25% more for parts than if I bought directly from Ford themselves. It became very obvious after speaking to them on the phone that they just didn’t want this job. Took my truck for A Care Auto Repair and was quoted $1500 less. They actually want the work. If you don’t want the job then just be transparent about it. Don’t send me an estimate that makes no sense. For example, a $38 oil filter. What? Just tell me you don’t want the job. It was really a waste of $199 diagnostic fee because they didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, just wasted my time with that inflated estimate which took nearly 2 days to receive.

For larger repairs like timing chain replacements, especially on vehicles where the engine must be removed, we aim to provide thorough estimates based on similar jobs we’ve completed. In your case, the valve cover damage and debris in the oil raised concerns that additional issues could come up during the repair. Our goal was to give you a realistic idea of the potential cost so you could make an informed decision about moving forward. We understand our estimate was higher than you expected, and we know how frustrating that can feel. We price parts according to what’s available from our suppliers, and when possible, we refine sourcing to pass along savings to our customers. Our estimates also reflect the value of our 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty, which is designed to provide long-term peace of mind. That said, we know every situation is different, and we respect your decision to find the option that was right for you. I had a very positive experience at Toole's Garage. Rafael was exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and informative. It was almost fate that I experienced a car issue right in front of their establishment. In short, the overall experience was excellent. The only aspect that could be improved was the pricing, as I felt it was slightly high. Specifically, the test and analysis cost $200, which seemed a bit excessive. I believe that a price of $200 would be fair if we had decided against having the car serviced at that location. However, considering I did choose to have the service performed there, and the total cost amounted to $800.00 (for a rather easy fix), I feel the $200 should've been waived. This is how the other mechanic shops do business, in my past experience. However, their customer service is truly outstanding. After resolving the initial problem with my car, they identified another issue that requires attention. I do intend to return to them to address this additional concern.

Update (9/15/2025): Since my first visit, I have returned to Toole's Garage twice more, and Rafael & Doc have consistently provided excellent service. The second visit was to address a pulsation damper leak, and the third was to repair my AC system. They are truly genuine and honest guys, and they have certainly earned my trust. I am very pleased to have discovered such a fantastic auto shop in central Stockton. The prices for the last two visits were also pretty reasonable. These gentlemen are wonderful!
